Autoclave FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions
Autoclave FAQs
Whether you operate a medical clinic, laboratory, tattoo studio, or nail salon, selecting and using the right autoclave is essential for safe, compliant sterilization. Below are answers to the most common questions about Revolutionary Science autoclaves.
What is an autoclave, and how does it work?
An autoclave is a steam sterilizer that uses high-pressure saturated steam to eliminate bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores from reusable tools and media. By maintaining temperatures typically around 121°C at 15 psi, autoclaves deliver complete sterilization in controlled cycles. This process is widely trusted in medical, laboratory, dental, and cosmetic environments.
What types of items can be sterilized in a Revolutionary Science autoclave?
Revolutionary Science autoclaves are designed to sterilize a wide variety of solid and porous instruments, including:
-
Scalpels and surgical tools
-
Dental instruments (excluding handpieces)
-
Tattoo grips, tips, and needles
-
Nail clippers, nippers, and drill bits
-
Petri plates, reusable glassware, and agar media
-
BHRT trocars and other lumened medical devices
Always follow specific guidelines for cleaning, packaging, and loading instruments before autoclaving.
Which autoclave is best for my application?
-
Medical, dental, or lab tools: SaniClave 102, 200, or 250
-
Tattoo or piercing studios: SaniClave 102 (unwrapped tools) or 200/200P (wrapped tools and printed records)
-
Nail salons and beauty spas: SaniClave 102 (basic) or 200/200P (wrapped tools, drying, and documentation)
-
BHRT and surgical practices: SaniClave 250 (trocar sterilization)
-
General labs and microbiology: SaniClave 50 (non-medical), 200 (for liquids and glassware)
What’s the difference between the SaniClave 102, 200, and 250?
-
SaniClave 102: Top-loading, FDA-cleared, ideal for unwrapped tools
-
SaniClave 200: Front-loading, FDA-cleared, includes drying cycle for pouched items
-
SaniClave 200P: Same as 200, with integrated printer for cycle documentation
-
SaniClave 250: Capable of sterilizing lumened instruments like trocars (required for BHRT clinics)
Can I use an autoclave for liquids like agar or media?
Yes. The SaniClave 200 series supports sterilization of liquid media. Use the slow steam release cycle to prevent boiling over. Always use appropriate autoclave-safe containers and allow for gradual cooling.
Are Revolutionary Science autoclaves FDA cleared?
Yes. All SaniClave models used in medical, dental, tattoo, and beauty settings (SaniClave 102, 200, 200P, and 250) are FDA-cleared and built to meet CDC and UL safety standards. The SaniClave 50 is not FDA-cleared and is intended for general lab use only.
Can I sterilize wrapped tools and gauze in these autoclaves?
Yes, but only models in the SaniClave 200 series (200, 200P, and 250) include a drying cycle necessary for proper sterilization of wrapped or porous items. Wrapped tools that are not dried properly may remain contaminated or unusable.
Do I need a printer for documentation?
Some regulatory bodies or inspection agencies require printouts of sterilization cycles. The SaniClave 200P includes an integrated printer that records temperature, pressure, and cycle duration to support compliance.
How often should I run spore testing or biological indicators?
Spore testing is typically recommended weekly or with each new sterilization load, depending on your regulatory requirements. Revolutionary Science offers biological indicators designed to work with the SaniClave series.
What kind of water should I use in my autoclave?
Always use distilled water to prevent scale buildup and maintain optimal steam generation. Tap water contains minerals that can damage the heating element and reduce autoclave lifespan.
What maintenance is required?
-
Empty and refill with distilled water regularly
-
Wipe down the chamber after use
-
Clean or replace the door gasket as needed
-
Periodically clean sterilization trays and baskets
-
Follow your model’s manual for descaling instructions
Revolutionary Science also offers replacement parts, sterilization trays, and gasket kits.
Are SaniClave autoclaves made in the USA?
